Feel like you may have overdone it yet again this holiday season? Well, you are not alone. According to this survey, statistics show 45% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions each year, and typically ‘Lose Weight’ is #1, and ‘Staying Fit and Healthy’ is #5.
To get this ball rolling, let’s talk about the most tempting way to jump start your resolution to feel healthy and fit in the New Year: the cleanse. A lot of doctors agree that those fad ‘juice cleanses’ are ineffective at actually helping you to get healthy, you just lose a lot of water weight and in most cases become very grumpy!
There are several much less intense ways to feel ‘cleansed’ that are healthier and much less expensive that investing in a juice cleanse.
Start your year off right: Cleanse!
There are so many cleansing properties of room-temperature water with a lemon wedge squeezed in. Not only will you feel better immediately, but if you drink it first thing in the morning, it can actually give you the benefit of igniting your metabolism!
Here are a few other added benefits to drinking lemon water:
– Lemon water has amazing digestive properties and can ease bloating
– Lemon water cleanses and stimulates the liver and kidneys
– Lemon juice is a great skin cleanser
Kombucha tea is fermented drink made with tea, sugar, bacteria and yeast. A very popular brand is GT Dave’s Synergy drinks. I love to drink it based upon the very sharp vinegar taste it has.. if you are nursing a hangover or just looking for a healthy tasting drink then kombucha is the way to go! If you’d like to wake up your palate while at the same time giving your digestive system a nice push towards feeling back on track, sip a kombucha tea for some of its suggested benefits:
– Due the simple acidity of the drink, the production of stomach acids can assist good microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract. (These microorganisms are great for digestion and the ridding of toxins.)
– Dr. Oz has encouraged his viewers to pick up a Kombucha tea, saying that you can ‘turbocharge your metabolism’ with this sparkling probiotic drink.
Relax in the Sauna
Our bodies produce sweat to help cool us down, but it’s also so good for you to sweat if you’d like to get out some toxins. Another benefit to sweating it out in the sauna is that it stimulates the release of endorphins, make you feel great and less bummed about all the champage that made it into your glass this season. Check out the nearest gym, many of them offer a session in the sauna. Be sure to drink plenty of water before and after your sweat session. You will feel like a new person afterwards!
2013, here we come!
